It also supplies a partial list of the organization's legislative and other achievements and links to its individual chapters. The Web site provides many resources including suggested reading, recommended links, newsworthy items, coastal news, eco-facts, and a bimonthly magazine, Making Waves. Highlights include Coastal A-Z, a reference tool containing articles on coastal environmental issues the organization's policies on beach preservation, artificial reefs, watercraft usage, marine protected areas, and other issues and a guide to beach water quality in California, Hawaii, Texas, Alabama, and parts of Florida, with more coastal states to be added. The Web site is dense but easy to maneuver and filled with color photographs throughout. The Blue Water Campaign seeks to protect the water quality in coastal watersheds and in the near-shore marine environment the Beach Preservation Campaign seeks to protect beaches and the Beach Access Campaign (Web page under construction) promotes public access to beaches. The Special Places Campaign identifies threatened ocean and coastal areas that need protection. The Surfrider Foundation manages four campaigns. The Snowrider Project highlights the interconnectivity between alpine and coastal watersheds by promoting awareness of the hydrologic cycle through outreach to mountain and downstream communities. The Thomas Pratte Memorial Scholarship Fund promotes academic research of the coastal environment. beaches and Artificial Reefs, which provides information on Pratte's Reef in Southern California. Current programs include Respect the Beach, a collection of coastal education modules for K-12 students Blue Water Taskforce, a program of water testing and monitoring Beachscape, citizen-based documentation and mapping of coastal environmental resources State of the Beach, an interactive update on the health of U.S. The twenty-six-person Surfrider staff disseminates up-to-date, science-based information for the development of programs for chapter implementation. Its membership is made up of surfers, swimmers, divers, bodyboarders, kayakers, and beach enthusiasts who have learned to be effective advocates for the ocean environment they value. The organization has more than forty thousand members, as well as affiliates in Europe, Brazil, Australia, and Japan. Its major programmatic work is carried out by sixty local chapters located along the East, West, Gulf, Puerto Rican, and Hawaiian coasts. The Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots environmental organization dedicated to protecting the nation's oceans and beaches.
